After decades of working as a food columnist, there were parts of me that were flabby, so it was with my brain. It would go blank mid-sentence when I tried to recall a fancy ingredient’s name. To challenge this old grey matter, I threw myself into a brand-new challenge: sinking a big sum of money and nearly a year into training for London’s Blue Badge, a tourist guide qualification recognized and respected internationally. However, it was not a decision I took lightly.

My fellow trainees were wonderfully diverse, from across the globe and various walks of life, ranging from taxi drivers and university lecturers to managers and retired teachers. Our training was no walk in the park: 12 demanding exams, twice-weekly lectures, day trips to Canterbury, and the toughest training: guiding on a 60-seat bus in front of my colleagues, describing buildings without sounding like a satellite navigation system. At times my head was bursting with tiny details: from the number of steps to St. Paul’s dome (穹顶) to the origin of guards’ bearskins, even the name of Churchill’s dog! It was a steep and overwhelming learning curve.

But eventually, I earned my Blue Badge. I’m not ashamed to say there were tears when the confirmation came through. Now, I still write and take international visitors around London. They arrive with enthusiasm, glass-half-full attitudes and seemingly no jet lag. Things I’ve taken for granted over 30 years, such as double-decker buses, pub signs and policemen on horses, are an endless source of delight for them and their questions are wonderfully varied.

This journey has rekindled my passion for our capital. Above all, it has added a new string to my professional bow, even though I’m well into my sixties.

24. What does the underlined word “flabby” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Relaxed.                            B.Flexible.                                              C.Weak.                                              D.Heavy.

25. What can we conclude about the Blue Badge course?

A. It saves time and money for learners.                                                                                         B.It comes with a demanding workload.

C. It is intended for global tourist guides.                                                                                         D.It requires interaction with real tourists.

26. What does the author gain from guiding international visitors?

A. A good reputation among tourists.                                                                                         B.A chance to make foreign friends.

C. A renewed appreciation for London.                                                                                         D.A relief from the pressure of work.

27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. A Guide’s Tough Training Journey                                                                                         B.Never Too Late to Reshape Yourself

C. The Global Value of a Blue Badge                                                                                         D.Seeing London Through Visitors’ Eyes

C

You’ve stuck to your bedtime, skipped afternoon coffee, and made your bedroom cool, dark and quiet as experts advise—but you’re still tossing and turning. Then your eye catches the silver light spilling through your curtains. It’s a bright full moon. You lie awake and can’t help wondering if that shining moon is the hidden cause of your sleepless night.

Two Swiss studies offered fascinating clues. In 2013, participants experienced a 30% drop in deep-sleep brain activity around the full moon, took 5 extra minutes to fall asleep, and lost 20 minutes of total sleep. They also reported a poorer sleep quality and lower levels of melatonin (褪黑素). A second Swiss study echoed these findings: participants slept 25 minutes less under full moons. Both of the early studies shared one major limitation—they were conducted in sleep laboratories, where the unfamiliar setting can throw off natural sleep patterns.

To address this limitation, scientists from Washington University conducted a real-life study. They tracked three Argentinian communities—a suburban area, a rural village with limited electricity, and a remote area with no electricity at all—via wristwatches for two months. Across all groups, regardless of artificial light access, sleep was disturbed in the nights before a full moon, but the effect was most striking in low-electricity areas, where moonlight ruled nights. The researchers suggest this may be an ancient adaptation: our ancestors probably stayed up later to hunt, socialize, or work by moonlight.

While the moon’s natural glow can disturb modern sleep cycles, the impact pales in comparison to the artificial light sources. Dr. Dimitriu, a sleep medicine specialist, says, “If a full moon has that power, imagine the impact of a bright screen right in front of your face!”

28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To show how to avoid sleeplessness.                                                                                         B.To describe a common sleep scene.

C. To imply a possible cause of sleeplessness.                                                                                         D.To emphasize the importance of sleep.

29. How is the American study different from Swiss studies?

A. It avoids the effect of lab environment.                                                                                         B.It measures different sleep duration.

C. It observes sleep in a foreign country.                                                                                         D.It involves exposure to artificial light.

30. Why may a full moon affect human sleep patterns according to paragraph 3?

A. It makes nights much brighter.                                                                                         B.It lowers melatonin levels.

C. It relates to evolutionary adaptation.                                                                                         D.It changes natural light cycles.

31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Digital products affect sleep more seriously.                                                                                         B.Screen lights damage human’s eyesight.

C. The moon’s glow pales in artificial light.                                                                                         D.A full moon’s power is hard to imagine.

D

Is a human writing an essay? How can you be sure? As it becomes harder to distinguish people from AI, different “solutions” are beginning to emerge. Authors are posting videos of themselves writing their books in real time to prove they’re not using large language models. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has come up with a device called The Orb which “confirms you are a unique human” by scanning your eyeballs. And under the EU’s AI Act, certain types of AI-generated content will have to be labeled as such from next year.

But some are beginning to object to the whole idea of AI labeling. One argument is that the labels are meaningless because AI use is becoming so common in the development process. Another objection is from smaller developers, which might use AI tools in order to compete with the resources of bigger developers. A third complaint is that it’s impossible to police whether people are truthful about their AI use, making it an “honesty tax”for honest developers.

In a world in which some people don’t care whether content was made by AI but others really do, transparency seems in principle like a good solution. Just like people who want to avoid certain ingredients in their food, labeling is useful for those who want to know, and can simply be ignored by those who don’t. The other advantage of transparency is that it creates a market for human creative professionals: if there are a large number of customers who want to continue to consume human-made content, they need to be able to identify it, or else both creators and consumers will lose out. Indeed, as AI use is now a part of our daily life and work, it is possible to imagine “Made by Humans” labels for creative products.

Transparency over AI use doesn’t fit simple “yes or no” labels. But as long as many people care about whether creative products are made by humans or machines, it is surely better than giving up. Either that or we could take our chances with The Orb.

32. What is The Orb designed for?

A. Helping writers record writing.                                                                                         B.Identifying a real human.

C. Labeling AI-generated content.                                                                                         D.Checking AI use in games.

33. What can we know about honesty tax?

A. It rewards honest developers.                                                                                         B.It puts an unfair burden on developers.

C. It encourages wider use of AI tools.                                                                                         D.It polices the honesty about AI use.

34. Why does the author mention food ingredient labels?

A. To explain the need for clear ads.                                                                                         B.To suggest a way to label AI.

C. To discuss customers’ preferences.                                                                                         D.To stress the significance of AI labeling.

35. What does the author think of AI labeling?

A. It’s unrealistic.    B. It lacks creativity.    C. It’s worth trying.     D. It boosts productivity.

第二节 (满分25分)

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a straight-A high school student, I buried myself in textbooks every day, cherishing the knowledge within the pages. So when Mom told me our neighbor wanted me to tutor (辅导) their fifth-grade daughter, Riley, in math, I was afraid it was a waste of time. Seeing my hesitation, Mom said, “They’ll pay you. And who knows, maybe you’ll get something unexpected.” I thought for a second and then agreed. Tutoring a fifth-grader in math? A piece of cake. Extra pocket money didn’t hurt either.

But our first meeting was a letdown. Riley, with unmindful eyes, had no interest in math at all. “I’m not going to college,” she cut me off. “I’ll work at my uncle’s restaurant anyway. Math? Pointless!” Her words and her “F” on the report card left me tongue-tied; all my lectures about the importance of math faced stares and shrugs.

Feeling defeated, I complained to Mom. But Mom said, “Maybe she needs to see math in real life, not just on paper.” Her words clicked. Riley had no use for numbers, but her face lit up whenever she talked about the restaurant—my idea formed.

For our next lesson, I led her to the kitchen. “Today, we’re baking cookies,”I announced. As we measured 3/4 cup of flour for 12 cookies, her eyes sparkled with curiosity. “3/4? That’s a fraction (分数), like in my book!” I smiled, “So, what if your uncle gets a big order for 48 cookies?” Her focus sharpened. “Four times the flour!” She exclaimed. I wrote down “3/4 × 4=?”, and she instantly answered, “Three cups!” “Bingo!” I said, high-fiving her. For the first time, I saw genuine excitement in her eyes. With the sweet smell of flour and sugar, we finished our special math lesson smoothly.

注意:

(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Soon, I went to tutor Riley again and noticed she was doing her math homework carefully.

第一节应用文

Version 1 (Choose Cuisine Show)

Dear Michael,

I hope this email finds you well. Hearing that the upcoming World Culture Fair needs to adjust the activities due to time limits, I’m writing to share my choice — the Cuisine Show.

Food serves as an irreplaceable carrier of cultures, bridging geographical gaps with its unique flavors while tasting diverse dishes allows us to experience regional customs firsthand. In contrast, preparing costumes for the Costume Show demands extra time and energy, which may not be efficient under the current limit.

Thank you for your dedication to this meaningful event. I hope my suggestion can be of some help. May the World Culture Fair achieve complete success and leave precious memories for every participant.

Yours sincerely,Li Hua

Version 2(Choose Costume Show)

Dear Michael,

I’m Li Hua, and I’m writing to express my heartfelt preference for preserving the Costume Show for the World Culture Fair, considering the limited duration.

Traditional costumes are vivid symbols of cultural aesthetics and historical heritage, bringing strong visual impact that can impress everyone at first sight. Participants can even try on costumes and take photos, creating unforgettable moments. On the other hand, the Cuisine Show faces unavoidable practical challenges such as food waste.

I believe your decision will make the fair wonderful and I hope my suggestion can be of some help. Thank you for devoting yourself to bringing us such a fantastic experience. Wish the World Culture Fair a brilliant success.

Yours sincerely,Li Hua

第二节读后续写

Soon, I went to tutor Riley again and noticed she was doing her math homework carefully. Her usual frown was gone, replaced by a look of intense concentration. She glanced up when she heard me come in, greeting me with a quick nod before turning back to her work. I asked about her progress in math, and she said she was getting the hang of it. We started using examples from her daily life, like calculating discounts on her favorite toys. Math was no longer a series of meaningless numbers on a page but a practical tool to understand her world. Our tutoring sessions transformed from a silent struggle into a lively thinking and discussion.

One day, Mom and I were cooking when Riley came, holding a report card high. “I got an A! An A in math!” She waved the report card for us to see, her face beaming with joy and pride. My mom and I exchanged a glance of surprise before congratulating her warmly. Riley gave me a tight hug and said, “Thank you. Math is kind of fun now.” A wave of fulfillment washed over me. My mom was right. Teaching wasn’t just about explaining textbooks; it was about finding the right key to unlock a person’s interest and potential. That ‘A’ was not just Riley’s victory, but ours, too.
